The Central Illinois Mudwater Archaeology Society is pleased to announce its inaugural project:

     100th Year Anniversary Archaeological Survey

One of the main objectives of archaeology is to shine a new light on lost and forgotten history. With that in mind, the Central Illinois Mudwater Archaeology Society is extremely excited to be taking part in a joint community effort to assist Peoria Public Broadcasting WTVP in creating a television documentary on the Columbia Riverboat Disaster.                                                                                                Joining WTVP in this community effort are:

  • The Tazewell County Genealogical and Historical Society
  • The Peoria Historical Society
  • Ken Zurski, author of The Wreck of the Columbia
  • The Spirit of Peoria

The Columbia riverboat disaster remains an important event in central Illinois history. Anyone who would like to contribute information, family stories, pictures, documents, etc.  -please go to our CONTACT page.

If you would like to learn more about the Columbia Disaster, please see our CURRENT PROJECTS page.

The Mudwater Archaeology Society is dedicated to the protection and preservation of all our underwater cultural resources. We recognize the frailty and historic value of said cultural resources and subscribe to the belief these resources belong to the public and not the individual, organization, or private company. The MAS appreciates that efforts should be made to encourage the overall public to take an active interest in maritime archaeology and be given the opportunity for active participation.
