In 2016, the central Illinois Mudwater Archaeology Society was formed as a 501c nonprofit corporation by individuals dedicated to the research, discovery and preservations of maritime history located within regional U.S. inland waterways. Our society endeavors to partner in this pursuit with local musuems, historical societies, libraries, and interested members of the general public. By forming a regional partnership agreement with Great Britain's Nautical Archaeology Society and teaching the NAS course syllabus, we hope to bring a true "PUBLIC ARCHAEOLOGY" program to central Illinois. All members of the public are welcome to participate in learning basic archaeology survey techniques for the expressed purpose of actively taking part in the archaeological documentation and preservation of invaluable pieces of lost local history.
